Freedom House: President Biden Must Help Reverse Tunisia’s Authoritarian Slide
On 3 March 2022, Freedom House published a letter signed by a number of former US Ambassadors, academics, experts and other stakeholders urging President Biden to act on the worsening situation for democracy in Tunisia. After President Kaïs Saïed’s power grab on 25 July 2021, Tunisia has seen one-man rule effectively imposed, with a recent roadmap lacking detail and implemented in an opaque manner lacking in public consultation. The roadmap also further extends the President's power and fails to address the economic crisis. Given Biden's renewed commitment to democracy at the Summit, the signatories urge President Biden in the Year of Action to "take concrete steps to return Tunisia to democratic governance". Economic support should be made conditional on completion of these steps.
