Beyond NATO, new alliances could defend democracy and counter Putin

John Davenport writes in the Conversation about opportunities for democratic alliances to respond to the new challenges to democracy and human rights in the 21st century. He draws from his research, which indicates that "new alliances may be needed to replace, or at least expand and support, the familiar ones built to keep global peace in the wake of World War II, when global politics were very different." He recommended in his 2018 book that democracies collaborate economically, militarily, technologically and morally in "A League of Democracies". The author highlights three promising new ideas for such alliances, with the Summit having the potential to make a valuable contribution to "An Alliance of Free Nations".
