Not invited to Biden’s democracy summit, China launches a propaganda blitz

John Ruwitch and Emily Feng give an overview of the Chinese reaction to the Summit, whereby it has released significant amounts of propaganda claiming superiority of China's "people's democratic dictatorship" over the workings of American democracy. These efforts involved Beijing's own democracy dialogue, accompanied by a 30-page white paper entitled China: Democracy that Works, a report heavily criticising American democracy, and countless editorials praising Chinese democracy over that of the US. However, by all independent metrics, governance in China consistently ranks below the bottom in terms of freedoms and democracy, with China's efforts to reframe its system managing to muddy the waters of international dynamics.
