Women’s Political Leadership Amid Closing Space in ASEAN

On 11 May 2022, the National Endowment for Democracy will hold an online event featuring women activists from Burma, Cambodia, the Philippines and Thailand, who will share strategies for promoting political participation and recommendations for international democracy supporters. Amid the dramatic democratic regression the Southeast Asia has seen over the past decade, the calls for human rights and democracy from women political leaders and activists in the region are especially notable.

The discussion will feature Chiranuch Premchaiporn (Jiew), media activist and a co-founder of Prachatai, Khin Lay, Burmese civil society leader, political activist, and the founder of the Triangle Women Organization (TWO), Mu Sochua, Cambodian politician and rights activist, Teresita Quintos Deles (Ging), co-founder, former chair, and current sector lead for Women at the International Center on Innovation, Transformation and Excellence in Governance (INCITEGov), Tricia Yeoh, CEO of IDEAS (Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs).
