Responses to Foreign Information Operations

There is increasing evidence of coordinated foreign efforts to interfere with democratic processes and public discussion. However, how we respond to these threats has garnered less discussion than the threat itself. This panel discussion will focus on assessing the efficacy, wisdom, and democratic implications of proposed and implemented solutions to state-sponsored information operations from both a policy and operational perspective. The discussion will help us to better understand effective or potentially damaging tools, and also inform the debate on countering digital authoritarianism.

The discussion will be moderated by Bret Schafer, Senior Fellow and Head, Information Manipulation Team, Alliance for Securing Democracy.

Speakers will include:

  • Renée DiResta,  technical research manager at Stanford Internet Observatory
  • Lee Foster, Senior Vice President at Alethea Group
  • Anneli Ahonen, Senior Fellow at ISD Global
  • Puma Shen, assistant professor at the National Taipei University's Graduate School of Criminology
