Summit for Democracy Newsletter: March 2024
Dear Summit for Democracy Friends,
We hope all is well with you! With the official announcement of the dates of the third Summit for Democracy, March 18-20, and the launch of the Summit website, we will start again to release weekly Summit4Democracy newsletters to keep you informed. This edition of the newsletter will update you on the events of the three-day Summit.
The Summit4Democracy newsletter is a joint initiative of the Global Democracy Coalition powered by Accountability Lab and International IDEA. The newsletter seeks to ensure that organizations involved in the Summit for Democracy and related processes are able to stay up-to-date on the activities, issues, and initiatives that emerged from those processes.

Summit for Democracy Updates
- The president of the Republic of Korea announced that the third Summit for Democracy is taking place on March 18-20, 2024, in Seoul. The theme of the third Summit will be ‘Democracy for Future Generations.’
- Registrations for participants and media are now possible on the official third Summit for Democracy website. Find further information on how to register here.
- The three-day Summit will feature a range of activities:
- Day 1 – March 18: In collaboration with the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), the Republic of Korea will convene a ministerial conference coupled with expert roundtable discussions on “Technology and Democracy” with leading experts, corporations, government officials, and international organizations in the field of emerging technology. The conference will discuss building norms and using emerging technologies for democratic innovation.
- Day 2 – March 19: On the Cohort, Civil Society and Youth Day, S4D cohorts, civil society and youth organizations will highlight their work in shaping democracy fit for future generations in diverse sessions and exhibition booths. The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA), the Organisation for Economic and Co-operation and Development (OECD), Open Government Partnership (OGP) and the Community of Democracies (CoD) are supporting the Republic of Korea (ROK) in organizing the Day 2 activities.
- The Day 2 activities will take place in the COEX Center, Seoul.
- Important practical information for organizers of sessions and/or exhibition booths on the Cohorts, Civil Society and Youth Day can be found here. This includes guidelines on the organization of sessions, exhibition booths, and information facilitating the visa application process and search for a hotel. Note that information will be continuously updated.
- Some key deadlines are (see further information):
- March 6: Hotel reservations need to be made to receive special rates
- March 8: Organizers of hybrid sessions need to fill out and submit an information form on their session
- March 13: Presentation material that requires support of the ROK Summit Preparatory Office needs to be uploaded
- Day 3 - March 20: The final day is the virtual Summit plenary, which will feature online participation from Heads of State, with interventions from civil society.
S4D Stakeholder Updates
- Leading up to the the third Summit for Democracy, USAID released a blog on how they are advancing electoral integrity, through three initiatives launched as part of the Summit for Democracy, under the Presidential Initiative for Democracy Renewal. - 2024 Global Democracy Coalition Forum: The 2024 GDC Forum will convene between 11 – 15 March 2024 in the lead up to the third Summit for Democracy. Anticipated as a week-long celebration for democracy, the 2024 Forum will include regional fora held in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic; Accra, Ghana; Barcelona, Spain; and Seoul, South Korea, culminating in its final convening day in South Korea on 15 March. - Partners for Democracy Day 2024: The GDC is organizing its second Partners for Democracy Day, scheduled for March 19, 2024. The event aims to provide an additional platform for civil society, international organizations, academic institutions, think tanks, philanthropic organizations, and the private sector, to engage in the Summit for Democracy and the global democracy debate.
- P4D event submissions will be accepted until 11:59pm EST/5:59am CET on March 5
- The Youth Democracy Cohort published three articles: Prioritising Youth Voice in Governance, Supporting Youth in Government, and Supporting Youth Freedom of Expression.

- Deputy Administrator Isobel Coleman spoke at The Atlantic Council's Freedom and Prosperity Center Event about USAID’s progress since the first Summit for Democracy
- Responding to rising autocratic assertiveness and an ongoing democratic recession, the Biden administration has advanced multiple new policy and aid initiatives to support democracy globally. The Carnegie Endowment for Democracy examined his efforts and revealed six main elements, each of which embodies a complex mix of promising opportunities and nagging dilemmas.
